Our History
We are proudly the only gold mining company in Guyana that’s family own and operated by locally born and raisedGuyanese.
Our history dates back to 1979 when Deodat Rajkumar (the second youngest child of the local business family the Rajkumars that owned wholesale and retail groceries stores as well as the Arawak Hotel) returned home to Guyana from his studies from Canada to work for the GGMC (Guyana Geology & Mines Commission). Deodat went on to secure land/mining blocks in 1993 from the government directly. After two years of exploratory work confirming the land was rich with GOLD, Deodat then moved his family and himself back to Guyana in 1995 establishing what is now known today as Guyana OKO Mining.
Deodat’s younger brother Ganesh Rajkumar (who was supportive financially to his brother throughout) came down from New York City (Where he owned real estate and retail Wine business) in 2000 eventually taking over the day to day operations in 2002 when Deodat moved back to the states with his family. Ganesh Rajkumar continue on with he and his brother’s dream by working hard through all the ups and downs of the gold mining business/industry, dealing with the fluctuating prices of gold for years while doing whatever it took to keep things going and growing including building a team (both labor and managerial),securing the property in the Capital city of Georgetown which now houses the company‘s headquarters and closing a few leasing/royalty agreements with various smaller miners including hard rock mining ( JAPO) out of Brazil for one of the 11 mining blocks controlled by Guyana OKO mining.
This previously mentioned deal with Hard Rock (JAPO) was does so in 2014 which lead to the overwhelming proof physically of what the Rajkumar brothers knew for years by successfully netting approximately 1000 ounces on a monthly basis from the land. The deal with Hard Rock mining remains in place and while impacted temporarily by Covid adds to this our well established history and concept. Ganesh Rajkumar now 69 has reenlisted his brother Deodat Now 70 and they have decided to come together bringing along the 2nd younger generation of Rajkumars to come aboard and complete the mission and dream that now has become reality.
